RegTech Trends for 2025

What does the RegTech universe have in store for us in 2025?

As we move through early 2025, the Regulatory Technology (RegTech) sector is already showing significant growth and innovation, transforming how governments and regulatory bodies handle compliance. Leveraging advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, and big data analytics, RegTech enhances compliance processes across various sectors. According to RegTech Africa, the market is projected to grow by USD 42 billion between 2024 and 2029, driven by increasing regulatory pressures and the demand for efficient solutions.

Key trends include the shift towards real-time monitoring and reporting systems, the use of regulatory sandboxes for testing new technologies, the increased automation in compliance processes and the integration of sustainability and ESG compliance tracking. This rise of RegTech promises greater transparency, efficiency, and trust in regulatory practices worldwide, marking a transformative era in the compliance landscape for public authorities.

Key RegTech Trends for 2025 and GVG’s Contributions

1. Real-time Monitoring and Tracking

This year, real-time monitoring and tracking emerge as a pivotal trend in the regtech ecosystem for governments. With regulatory landscapes becoming increasingly complex, the need for instantaneous data analysis and compliance assurance is paramount. Real-time monitoring technologies enable governments to detect anomalies, prevent fraud, and ensure regulatory adherence in a proactive manner. These advanced systems not only enhance operational efficiency but also foster a culture of transparency and trust within public administration. By leveraging real-time tracking capabilities, government agencies can swiftly respond to regulatory changes, minimize risks, and maintain public confidence in their regulatory frameworks. As a result, the integration of real-time monitoring and tracking solutions is set to revolutionize the regtech landscape for governments, making compliance more dynamic and responsive than ever before.

From GVG we can say that this trend has been the norm for several years! The proof of this is our work in Rwanda. The implementation of GVG’s technology enabled the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) to effectively combat fraud and increase revenues generated from international calls. This initiative led to an impressive 122% increase in international traffic revenues in the first year alone.

2. Regulatory sandboxes

Regulatory sandboxes are proving to be a vital trend in the regtech ecosystem for governments in developing countries, such as those in Africa. These sandboxes provide a controlled environment where new technologies can be tested and refined without the full weight of regulatory constraints. For governments in these regions, regulatory sandboxes offer an invaluable opportunity to foster innovation, enhance regulatory frameworks, and ensure technologies are compliant before full-scale implementation. This approach not only encourages the development of cutting-edge solutions but also helps build robust and responsive regulatory systems that can adapt to the unique challenges and needs of developing economies. By leveraging regulatory sandboxes, governments in Africa can drive economic growth, improve governance, and strengthen public trust in regulatory practices.

In Africa, countries like Sierra Leone launched their sandbox regulatory framework in 2018, supported by the Bank of Sierra Leone, Financial Sector Deepening Africa (FSDA), and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). Other countries, including Rwanda, Morocco, and South Africa have also established regulatory sandboxes to encourage innovation and ensure that new technologies comply with regulatory standards before being fully deployed. 3. Compliance Automation

By automating compliance tasks, these governments can significantly reduce manual errors and operational costs, leading to more efficient and transparent regulatory practices. This trend is particularly crucial for developing nations as it enables them to streamline their regulatory frameworks, ensuring faster and more accurate adherence to international standards. Automation also frees up valuable resources that can be redirected towards other critical areas of governance and development.

The automation of compliance processes is part of the critical functionality of all our solutions, resulting in a marked reduction in human error and a significant increase in efficiency. Click here to see the amazing results in different countries!

4. Sustainability and ESG Compliance

With increasing global focus on sustainable development, governments are leveraging regtech solutions to monitor and report on ESG goals. These technologies provide real-time data and analytics, enabling governments to track environmental impacts, ensure social responsibility, and uphold governance standards. By integrating ESG compliance into regulatory frameworks, governments can foster greater transparency, accountability, and trust, while driving progress towards sustainable and equitable growth. This approach not only enhances regulatory efficiency but also aligns with international sustainability commitments, benefiting both the environment and society.

As a partner of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, GVG contributes to harnessing the data revolution to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) specifically supporting data-driven decision-making.

5. A step up in technologies: AI and machine learning for predictive compliance

AI and machine learning are revolutionizing predictive compliance within the regtech ecosystem, particularly for governments. By leveraging these advanced technologies, governments can anticipate regulatory changes, identify potential risks, and implement proactive compliance strategies. AI-driven predictive analytics enable real-time monitoring and reporting, allowing for swift responses to emerging compliance issues.

AI and ML are of particular interest to African telecom operators, for instance, when it comes to preventing fraud and money laundering. The operators’ activities are indeed very vulnerable to these threats, due to the large sums and the high number of customers they deal with. AI and ML can help not only ensure that the operators are not committing any crime, but also protect the customers against fraud.

Overcoming Key Challenges:

Parallel to the trends in this ecosystem are the challenges that will be tackled by governments and institutions to achieve optimal regulatory efficiency:

  • Keeping pace with rapidly evolving regulations
  • Ensuring data privacy and security
  • Integration with legacy systems
  • Addressing the skills gap in RegTech expertise
